Notifications to keep apps always up to date

In a fast-paced technological world, innovation and updates are essential for an app to continue to attract and retain users, thus improving interaction rates.

Google wants to go one step further and has therefore added a new tool to the Google Play Console so that developers can add an invitation that allows users with an outdated version of the app to easily update it.

Setting up these notifications that appear when the user opens an application prompts the user to update the app and not wait for it to be done automatically later.

These new notifications are useful when an old version is going to stop working or when security gaps have been found. In addition, if you want to improve the user experience, the best option is to update as soon as possible.

Such notifications will appear every time the user opens the app and there will be the option to update on the spot, see more information about it, or reject the update and continue with the old version.

Requirements for setting new notifications

What do you need to take into account to activate this new tool? Here are the requirements you must follow to start sending notifications to users to update their applications.

There must be a new version that users can access in the different channels where the app to be updated is available.

The application must be registered in the Play application.
The application must have been published with Android App Bundle.
Please note that the update can be cancelled at any time.
The targeting criteria can be extended at any time.

Steps to prompt users to update the app

How to start integrating these notifications to update an application? Here are the steps to follow to ask users to update their apps. For more information, see Play Console Help.

Open the Play Console and go to the App Bundle Explorer page.
Click Recovery Tools and select Ask users to update their version from the drop-down menu.
Choose the app bundles from which you want to ask users to upgrade their version.
You can optionally click Show instructions to expand the on-screen steps and test your request.
Choose your targeting criteria. This way, the next time the included users open the application, they will see a notification that they need to upgrade. The targeting criteria can be:
1) All users of the selected application version
2) By country or region
3) By Android version

As you can see, updating an app is becoming more and more important and this Google tool emerges as a new way to ask users to update an app, thus improving their experience and the security of their data.

Apple’s new fee for distributing apps in third-party stores

Apple has its mobile app store which, together with Google Play, are the two major global platforms for downloading apps.

In recent months and given new EU regulations, Apple has announced new measures that will affect the payment processing and the way apps are distributed.

The new EU trade rules that constrain Apple’s actions will have to be complied with from March 2024. Apple has therefore been quick to announce the various updates, including the opening of its operating system to third-party app stores.

This will make it easier for developers to distribute an iOS app in third-party stores and not just through the App Store. Despite these new changes, Apple wants to offer developers the option of being with the current terms.

Sometimes, it is necessary to transfer a mobile app when you decide to sell it or when it needs to change ownership, but how to transfer a published iOS app to another account?

Apple’s new updates

Apple is finally opening iOS apps to third-party stores in the European Union, ushering in a new era with its advantages and disadvantages.

The new feature is that any application that exceeds one million installations per year must pay Apple a fee of 50 cents for each installation. This introduces a new fee structure for apps that want to be distributed in third-party shops.

While this may be an advantage for some companies, apps that are very popular and have more than 1 million downloads per year will have to pay a large amount of money. In addition, app updates also count as installations and must be paid for.

This is a key point for many companies as app updates are constant nowadays and almost no app goes more than a year without an update. This means that a mobile app will indefinitely pay Apple 0.5 euros per user/year when it exceeds one million installations. In addition, people who installed an app years ago and do not use it often but still receive automatic updates must also be included.

This makes it an expensive proposition for many companies. However, developers will always have the option of keeping the 30 percent reduction and no installation fee, or they can waive the reduced revenue in exchange for paying the 0.5 euro fee.

This development by Apple might be worthwhile for large companies with sufficient financial resources. There are cases of small companies with viral apps that have millions of downloads in a short period and then fall into oblivion on users’ devices. In this case, applying this fee could be a big problem for these companies, which see how their applications are still installed on devices but are not used and are therefore no longer profitable.

Why this new fee?

Apple justifies this new fee of 0.5 euros due to the effort and time the company dedicates to creating tools for developers to help them in their process of creating and distributing applications.

Along with all these new features, Apple will introduce a series of measures to ensure that developers comply with the requirements so that opening up to third-party shops does not create security breaches.

On top of all this, Apple does not make it easy for apps to flow users from one shop to another. For the whole process to work properly, a user must first install the new app shop, then uninstall the old version of the app downloaded from the App Store, and finally reinstall the app via the new shop.

Differences between the current terms and Apple’s new offerings

From March 2024, Apple will start implementing the new features announced in recent weeks. Due to new EU regulations, Apple is adopting changes to payment processing and the way an iOS app is distributed in third-party stores.

Current terms: Continue to maintain distribution of apps in the Apple Store. When developers distribute an app on the App Store they pay a commission for the sale of digital goods and services.

New terms: Developers have additional distribution and payment processing options. Apple will apply a reduced commission, an optional payment processing fee, and a fee for the first annual installs over one million in the last 12 months. Developers who take advantage of these terms will be able to:

Distribute iOS apps on the App Store or alternative app marketplaces.
Process payments through the App Store’s secure in-app purchase system, an alternative payment service provider, or a link to your website from your app.

As can be seen, these updates are generating controversy among Apple, developers, and companies. They see in these fees and new features a possible “trap” that will ultimately substantially increase the costs of distributing a mobile application.

ABAMobile in the Mobile World Congress 2017

Dear colleagues and friends,

As these past years, we will be on Mobile World Congress from 28th Feb to 2nd Mar. As always, the event is held in Barcelona (Spain) and there, we can see the latest mobile products and services that are launched in the market.

In this event, we can attend to several presentations about mobile technologies. In addition, apart from knowing the newest trends, also we can show our products and mobile services for business. In this way, the companies that attend the event can increase their contacts by network b2b meetings. This is a great opportunity for small and medium-sized businesses to know potential clients and create long relations with partners.

As a worldwide event, a lot of firms attend and it means that we can share opinions and knowledge about the industry and solutions.

One more year at the Mobile World Congress

As every year, ABAMobile is getting ready to attend again to the biggest event in the mobile sector in Spain. It is also one of the most important worldwide. The Mobile World Congress 2015 will be held in Barcelona. This year, we are going together with Red.es, giving us the opportunity to enter ‘Hall Spain’ which is the best place for networking with national and international participating companies.

Like last year, we will also take part in bilateral meetings with companies from all around the world. The objective is to exchange solutions for needs allowing possible partnerships in the future.

Furthermore, the event is also a great trade fair for business. The MWC always brings the latest innovations in the mobile sector worldwide and we will be able to spot new devices to be launched in the following months. As Silver ISV Partner of Samsung (ABAMobile is ISV Partner of Samsung since 2014), we will have the opportunity to attend the ‘Unpacking and Showcase’ events organized by Samsung during the congress.

ABAMobile at ‘Mobile Business Day’

ABAMobile has participated in Oviedo in the ‘Mobile Business Day’. The event was about business opportunities and it was organized by the TIC Cluster, FADE, and Knowledge AEI.

In the demo area, nine companies showed different solutions and success cases related to mobility. Our pilot project for an NFC-based access control system for events was released and tested by participants in our stand. Some other NFC technology possibilities and examples were also shown.

The success of the event in attendance and participation clearly reflects the interest in mobile technology by the Asturian Businesses.

ABAMobile in the European Business Day in Bordeaux

On March 21 we had the privilege to participate in the European Business Day European project EIBT-SUDOE, held in the city of Bordeaux (France).

Thank CEEI Asturias, as a project´s partner, for the invitation to participate in this international networking event with EIBTs of Alentejo region (Portugal), Asturias, Biscay, Navarre, and Aquitaine (France).

This networking aims to help EIBTs to strengthen and increase contacts and explore new opportunities for collaboration or business among the attendees.

For us, it was quite an experience to present our project in an international environment. Furthermore, it has served us to know more in-depth the services and products offered by Trojaola & LIST, Intelmec, Vortica, with whom we share not only the event, also the travel.

What is SUDOE Program?

SUDOE EIBT project fits into a wider program, SUDOE Program aimed at consolidating Southeast Europe as a territorial cooperation area in the scope of competitiveness and innovation, the environment, sustainable development, and spatial planning for contributing to a harmonious and balanced integration in their regions within the objectives of economic and social cohesion of the EU.

This new generation SUDOE Program was developed by the four Member States, Spain, France, Portugal, and Gibraltar the UK, and is part of the European Territorial Cooperation Objective, co-funded by the ERDF Structural Funds for the period 2007-2013.

ABAMobile attends Mobile World Congress 2013

Last week of March, two people of ABAMobile´s team were in Barcelona, for four days, in the World’s largest mobile event, the Mobile World Congress 2013.

Our visit fulfilled several objectives

– Participate in the NOKIA developers’ day, where we had the opportunity to learn the latest news about NOKIA and Windows Phone 8 development tools, as well as share experiences with developers worldwide and experts on these platforms.

– Test the latest products, hardware, and software that are about to hit the market.

– Watch over mobility trends for the enterprise customer.

– Make contact with companies to develop customer-oriented products and reach business partnerships that may be beneficial to our customers.

There were all mobile manufacturers except Apple and BlackBerry, and we could try and experience all the high-end models that are going to be launched in the coming months. HTC One, Xperia Z, Galaxy Note 8.0, Grand Memo ZTE, Huawei Ascend P2, etc. …

Regarding mobile operating systems, perhaps we missed the presence of Android and Blackberry, who attended in the previous congress. However, these absences were well used by Firefox OS, one of the important in the Congress, and we can find information about it, not only in its stand but also in the stands of Telefónica, ZTE, and GeeksPhone. Also had his presence, but to a lesser extent, the mobile operating system UBUNTU.

Firefox OS has signed an agreement with 17 mobile operators, including Telefónica, who is going to launch the first devices in summer 2013 by the hand of the manufacturer ZTE, in Spain, Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela.

A new feature this year was the NFC experience. We use our mobile phones to access the venue without having to show any additional identification and get information related to the conferences in several points of information prepared for NFC devices. Attendees from a small group of countries could also use their mobile to pay within the enclosure, in restaurants. Unfortunately, Spanish attendees did not have that possibility.

One area was devoted to the NFC experience where there were specific NFC stands like CaixaBank company, Telefonica, Gemalto, Visa, Assa Abloy, openTrends, etc. … Sony made available to participants, upon request, a device with NFC for using it during the four days of the event.

Regarding the business customer solutions, the main trends were BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and MDM (Mobile Device Management). We have seen in action the world leader solution in this field AirWatch, which has reached an agreement with Samsung to support their platform KNOX which will handle two different environments (personal and professional) in a single device.

We have also used the conference to attend several seminars related to NFC technology for transportation, for the retail sector, etc…

We are looking forward to attending the 2014 edition.

ABAMobile with AJE Asturias at the University of Oviedo

On Friday, February 15th we had the opportunity to talk about our business experience to students in the Master’s degree in Digital Home and Robotic Services at the University of Oviedo.

As a mobile development company and software experts, AJE Asturias called us in order to invite us to stay in this activity for the University of Oviedo. There, we have told the pupils our path over these years and we have noticed the real interest that young people from Asturias have in software technologies and robotics. Also, we have told them the great opportunities they can find in the technology industry because it is a sector in development and with big power.

Alberto was the person who represented the ABAMobile team and its values and philosophy, so we are sure that it managed to capture the interest of the students.

We have to thank both, the direction of the master’s degree and AJE Asturias, who have had ABAMobile in mind to participate in the talks organized by the master’s degree.

It was quite an experience to share our knowledge with students and we hope you found topics covered during the talk interesting.

January 31, we participated in the Networking Macro-events organized by Emplea-t 4×4 with the participation of four collectives (about 300 people).

Project t Emplea-t 4×4 general objective is the Asturias labor market revitalization, through a Total Talent Management, encouraging contact and cooperation of those agents considered vital to the recovery of employment and entrepreneurship.

This project aims to

Sensitize and energize the business and entrepreneurial social reality.
Contribute proactively to job creation and business development, facilitating and contacting talent through different channels and strategies.
Break the gap between unemployed, companies and recruiters.
Generate a common channel to share entrepreneurial experiences, business or employment-related.
Create and strengthen opportunities for dialogue, the transmission of know-how and debate.
Contacting professionals dedicated to job placement and selection with potential customers (employers and unemployed).
Include, in networking activities, the collective who needs more this help: people actively seeking employment.
